The idea of the Poetry Project

Right:  the cold water of the lake.

In 2000 I'm went to Ireland to the Tyrone Guthrie Centre to work on some poetry to do with landscape and memory.  For six weeks in June and July I lived and worked at the Centre, concentrating on a poetry project.

I lived beside a lake for the first time ever and each day I would check the lake's edge, the size of the waves, the smoothness of the water, where the debris had collected, whether there were any fishermen around, where the swans were. I think the lake will feature in future poems.

I also met some wonderful people from Ireland and elsewhere: poets, childrens' writers, sculptors, photographers, visual artists, screenwriters and lots more. It was a very stimulating time. At the end of the time I'd finished a group of poems centred around landscape and memory that I hope will be a core part of my next collection.

This project has been assisted by the Australia Council for the Arts and I am grateful for their support.
